Reflections on a Busy COP28 (Pitch) in London

Greenbackers Partner Andrew Smith sums up all the action on 6 December, during COP28, when we hosted our bi-annual Super Pitch in London…with 20 fantastic cleantech businesses in a room full of investors.

“Grey London skies on Tuesday 5th December were replaced by bright winter sun as Robert Hokin and I, along with our exceptional associates Annika Borrmann and Anton Themen, headed for Withers Tech for the Greenbackers Super Pitch on 6th December. Greenbackers Partner John Steedman was on hand whilst colleague Mark Hannigan was busy in Houston running a panel session at the Pumps and Pipes conference.

Framed by St Pauls and the Old Bailey, the Withers offices incorporate a top event space which was ideal for hosting this set-piece Greenbackers event.

The Master deck (all 327 slides of it!) was fully loaded, and with a few late amendments requested by speakers and presenters, capably inserted by Greenbackers’ own Anton Themen, good to go.

Twenty presentation decks alongside intro slides and panel session slides were accompanied by an exclusive premiere broadcast by Solar Impulse’s Bertrand Piccard from the COP itself.

Our videographer got set up and readied the tech for the shots he needed and the delegate badges were all laid out and the early bird guests began to arrive, including Brian Power all the way from Australia representing HSA (Hydrogen Systems Australia). Overall, we hosted 105 delegates excluding Greenbackers and Withers attendees and there were another 70 who might have come if they could have made it in through the rail strike.

What a great day! Networking galore over the welcoming lunch, the session breaks, and at the post-pitching drinks and canapes. Lots of conversations commenced and many more to come as we process loads of feedback forms, emails and also commence reaching out to those who registered but couldn’t make it.”

“Thanks for hosting such an excellent event on Wednesday, Greenbackers. Attendance was great as were the pitches” Edmund Hill-Smith CFA, Investment Manager, Rathbones Group Plc

“Very professionally run and informative, a real credit to Greenbackers. I look forward to seeing more of these in the coming years.” Archie Thomason, Associate, Viresco Capital
